NEW GROUP TRAINING CLASS AT HOPE RESCUE, LLANHARAN!
For dogs aged 6 months and over - especially suited to newly adopted/rescue dogs
Bringing a new dog into your family is a huge commitment. Just like puppies, adult dogs require lots of help to settle into their new lives and homes. Our training classes are an excellent way for you and you dog to develop a relationship and for your dog to learn that being around other dogs and humans can be fun and rewarding.
Our 'Everyday Essentials' training class takes place over 7 weeks and will take place at Hope Rescue Centre in Llanharan. Although it is open to dogs over the age of 6 months, it is especially suited to new rescues dogs*.
We start the course with an information evening, where owners can meet our Coaches and learn about how we train and why our methods work. We'll also meet some of the Houndability dogs and talk about how to overcome some of the challenges of adopting an adult dog.
Our Everyday Essential training classes have a maximum of 6 dogs so it is not too overwhelming for dogs who may not have been in a class environment with other dogs before. All dogs remain on a lead or long line for the duration of the class, so there is no fear of the more boisterous dogs intimidating quieter ones. We can normally accomodate dogs of all personalities and dispositions, although there are some dogs who may need some individual help and support before being able to join a class. Please contact us if you would like to discuss how suitable your dog might be for a group class.
Real Life Training for Real Dogs
Because your dog will spend much of her life outside, we like to train in the great outdoors whenever we can, so that your dog learns around the distractions that the outdoors presents. However, we also have access to an indoor training space at our venue at Hope Rescue, so the show will go on whatever the weather :)
This class is a combination of doggy life skills and useful manners behaviours, so that your dog learns that being around you is lots of fun and picks up some new skills too. We like to mix things up in class, according to the mix of dogs we have, but will cover the following important basics:
* Name recognition - teaching your new dog to respond to their name
* Making eye contact - teaching your new dog that looking at you is a great thing to do
* Touch - teaching a hand or item target, which teaches them that hands moving towards them are a good thing!
* Sit / Down - stationary behaviours which are functional in all kinds of places
* Settle on a matt - a great one for visits to the pub or cafe!
We will also work on building the foundations to learn:
* Impulse control - learning to control their impulses around food, toys and other dogs
* Walking on a loose lead - who doesn't want a dog who walks nicely on the lead?!
* Recall - absolutely essential for safety
* Stay - an important one for impulse control around doors or cars
Each week, our Coaches will also be on hand to discuss other aspects of your dog's behaviour, i.e. Toilet training, crate training, chewing, barking and others. We are also stockists of Perfect Fit harnesses and Houndagrip training leads and longlines, and these will be available to purchase at the end of each class. If you feel that you and your dog would benefit from a 121 training session, bookable slots will be available for these each week.
